Sudden Hearing Loss
Sudden deafness or hearing loss is an unexplained rapid loss of hearing. It happens either all at once or in a few days, frequently affecting only one ear.
KAPOS offers specialized acupuncture for recovering from the sudden hearing loss.
What KAPOS does as a treatment for Sudden Hearing Loss
We have several unique points.
⦿No needling around the ear
Needling around ear is nonsense because the needle can’t reach the inner ear. Even if it’s possible, such needling is too dangerous, therefore, nobody practices it.
Needling the ear appears as if it stimulates the affected area, but in truth, it doesn’t. Instead, we pinpoint acupoints from all over the body which we determine to be more effective in correlation with the inner ear. This contrasts to the ones around the the ear.
⚫ Loosen tension around the jaw joints
In order to improve the condition of the inner ear, it is possible to do so by loosening the jaw joints. This is because the joints of the jaws and the ears are in close proximity to each other, especially the inner part of the ear. However, the jaw joints have many related muscles, thus to provide a more sufficient effect, acupoints must be selected very carefully. These will help bring greater balance to the entire body.
⚫Resolve the stiffness in the neck and the shoulders
A part of recovering hearing relates to the blood that flows towards the inner ear. Because of this, it is important to get the blood moving there. The neck and the shoulders are the right places to approach in order to do this. In easing tight muscles of these areas, the loosening helps the ear to receive better blood flow.
For resolving stiffness in the neck and the shoulders, the shoulder blades are the most important parts to focus on. This is why we use acupoints particularly found in the hand, the food, and the back.
Approach through the nose and the throat
The ear, nose, and throat are all connected. This why to fix any part of the ear, we cannot ignore the conditions of the nose and throat. By keeping the nasal passages open, and by alleviating throat irritation, we can help the ear recover better.
What are the chances of the recovery?
If you notice any changes to the symptoms around your face after 3 to 5 sessions, there’s a good chance that things will improve.
Additionally, the prospect of good recovery also depends on the time that has passed since the onset of the symptoms.
Prospect of hearing improvement by the duration after onset

70 – 80% of the patients recovered
Targeted hearing ability : 100%

Targeted hearing ability : a little improvement
More than a year
Less than 1% of the patients recovered
Targeted hearing ability : difficult
What you can do
Rest is essential for hearing recovery. Take sufficient rest after treatment and make sure you get enough sleep as well. Avoid an accumulation of fatigue each and every day, otherwise recovery may be delayed or stifled.
Feeling like my tinnitus has increased
In the process of recovering your hearing, symptoms of tinnitus may temporarily increase. It’s because the recovery of hearing amplifies the perception of sound. This can temporarily confuse the brain. Tinnitus will eventually lessen overtime as you recover further.
Recovery is so slow that I feel anxiety
While hearing loss is fast and sudden, recovery from this problem can take time. Because this improvement is a gradual process that gets better day-to-day, there’s no need to rush. The patience needed alongside treatment is very important and helpful to maintain a healthy mind.
When should I start the treatment?
It is strongly recommended to come as soon as possible after you recognize hearing loss. The earlier the treatment, the better. This is because higher recovery rate is associated with instant action.
Treatment pace
It is necessary to go into treatment 2 to 3 times a week. This will last a duration of 1 – 3 months. If the treatment is started early, better results may be seen with lesser visits.
What to bring
If you have an audiogram, please bring it. We request you to take a hearing test once every 2 weeks. This is to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. Please receive the audiogram at a hospital and bring it to our clinic.
Can I have simultaneous treatments?
While there is no problem visiting medical clinics alongside KAPOS, it is not recommended to visit other acupuncture and alternative medicine clinics simultaneously. This is because it may cause excessive stimulus to your body, thus making it difficult to evaluate the treatment given by KAPOS.
